Tech Apprenticeship

KC Tech Council Removes Barriers to Train and Hire Technology Professionals at Every Level

The KC Tech Council’s apprenticeship program allows companies to select a candidate for one of 15+ roles, matches that individual with a related training program, then employs that candidate in a one-year on-the-job apprenticeship for a reduced salary before hiring that apprentice at the culmination of the program. This non-traditional approach to recruiting and upskilling tech talent helps greater Kansas City employers compete for top talent while building a more diverse and inclusive tech workforce.

The tech apprenticeship program addresses the critical need for skilled tech professionals while creating pathways for local residents to access high-quality careers. By investing in homegrown talent, employers strengthen the regional economy and help position Kansas City as a competitive market for technology innovation and business growth.

FINANCIAL INCENTIVES

The KC Tech Council supplements funding for training through the Department of Labor to cover the cost of delivering apprenticeship programs. We will also navigate this process of providing funds and opportunities for the employer. In addition, companies may be eligible for additional federal incentives, funding from state and local governments, and tax credits for recruiting apprentices.

TRAINING AND MENTORSHIP

The KC Tech Council supports all apprentices via Apprenti by creating an orientation before their classroom or related technical instruction (RTI) even begins. During orientation, apprentices have the opportunity to learn about the support services throughout their program and more information about their employer. The apprenticeship education team has regular check-ins with training providers throughout the related technical instruction stage to ensure that the apprentices progress through the program as expected. The team also consults with employers to ensure that the training curriculum is aligned with the duties they will perform on the job. Additionally, apprentices receive regular guidance and direct support throughout the program.

STICKING POWER AND RETENTION

As apprentices approach their one-year mark with employers, Apprenti checks in to view their progress and to determine if there are any challenges. Although many employers bring their apprentices on board early, we also work with employers to extend apprenticeships if they feel more time is needed for training. By result, apprentices and employers have the opportunity to deepen their professional relationship, often creating longevity and mutually beneficial outcomes for both parties.

For Candidates

Our apprenticeship program puts you on a straightforward, step-by-step fast track toward your dream job. The tech industry is seeking to diversify its workforce, and our apprenticeship program is actively recruiting—everyone over the age of 18 is eligible to apply. No degree is required, only a high school education, and no prior technical experience is necessary. As a Registered Apprenticeship program, minimum rates are set for pay based on location and occupation, with raises typically provided after six months. Apprentices are entitled to health and dental benefits over the course of their job training and potentially other company standard benefits such as 401k retirement savings or a health care savings account. We add apprenticeship opportunities on a rolling basis based on the interest of hiring partners.

The first step in your tech career starts with taking the assessment. The application includes a short questionnaire where you’ll share information about yourself, your desired occupation and your location. Click here to learn more about available opportunities.
