Data Center Allliance
KC Tech Council launched the Data Center Alliance to advocate for smart public policy, educate Kansas Citians on the economic and workforce contributions of data center development, and equip community stakeholders with the information they need to engage meaningfully on questions of siting, construction and operation.
The Data Center Alliance is made up of industry partners, service providers and economic development organizations that are actively engaged in data center development across the Kansas City region.
Real revenue into our communities.
Good-paying, lasting jobs.
They won’t raise your utility rate.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Data centers are the critical digital infrastructure underpinning the modern global economy.
These secure facilities enable everything from the functioning of banking, health care, government services and complex business operations, to map navigation and streaming media.
- These services include essential and everyday communications – such as email and video calls, streaming and social media – but much more than that, data centers are the backbone of the economy, providing resilience and security for defense, education, emergency services, financial services, health care and the global race for AI.
- They are not optional infrastructure. Without them, organizations have nowhere to house the hardware-based technology needed to run their businesses.
- Data centers are the modern equivalent of power plants and water treatment facilities. Just as those facilities provide electricity and clean water, data centers provide the digital infrastructure that powers our economy, communications, healthcare, and public safety.
WHY IT MATTERS
Companies investing in data centers in the KC region create significant community benefits:
- Construction & Trades: Each hyperscale project can employ up to 600 construction workers at a time, sustaining decades of work and delivering millions in wages to local families.
- Local Infrastructure & Public Revenue: Data centers contribute significant property tax revenue that strengthens schools, libraries, roads and utilities.
- Small-Business Impact: Construction crews, engineers and suppliers eat, shop, and stay local, infusing millions into small businesses and service industries across the metro.
- Workforce & STEM Opportunities: Investments in tech infrastructure drive demand for electricians, welders, software engineers and HVAC specialists, creating new pathways into high-wage, high-skill careers. Data center management requires highly skilled, well-compensated professionals across server maintenance, networking, security and automation.
- Data centers generate millions of dollars in tax revenue that often go directly to funding local schools, fire departments, and parks, lowering the tax burden on residential homeowners.
